Hair Loss

Types of Hair Loss
Alopecia is the general term for human hair loss, either on the body or on the head. As we know, hair loss mostly occurs in men, but certain conditions may cause women to lose some or all of their hair too. The most common type of hair loss, however, is Male Pattern Hair Loss, which - as the name suggests - is a typically male affliction. MPHL usually starts at the temples or on the crown of the head and causes the hair to progressively thin out over the course of a number of years. Eventually, this could lead to complete baldness or - more commonly - loss of hair on the top surface of the scalp.

Medical Solution for Hair Loss
There is a wide range of treatments on the market today, which claim to combat hair loss, ranging from specialist shampoos to hair transplants. These 'solutions' can be very costly and are often ineffective at best, especially in the long term. If you suffer from hair loss, the best thing to do is turn to your doctor for professional advice combined with prescribed medication. One of the most effective medications for reducing Male Pattern Hair Loss and stimulating hair growth is Finasteride.

Generic Propecia (Finasteride) is the first and only approved medication that has been clinically proven to treat male pattern hair loss. This medication works by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is involved in the development of male pattern hair loss and baldness. Most men using Generic Propecia (Finasteride) reported an increase in the amount of hair, a decrease in hair loss and an improvement in appearance.

Causes of Hair Loss
It is normal for humans to lose on average 50-100 hairs per day, so if you notice a few stray hairs on your clothes it is no cause for concern. However, if you are suffering from excessive hair loss, there are various possible causes.

Believe it or not, sometimes people lose their hair due to purely psychological causes. When this happens, stress is usually the main factor involved. The good news is, however, that this type of hair loss is only temporary and the hair should start to grow back once the stressful period has passed.

Men (or women) could also start losing their hair because of a number of physical reasons. Hair loss is often attributed to certain skin conditions, iron deficiency, genetics or simply old age. Women may experience hair loss or thinning hair after child birth or when they are going through the menopause.

Research has pinpointed testosterone as a major cause of Male Pattern Hair Loss. When testosterone reacts with a certain enzyme that can be found on the scalp, a new and stronger male sex hormone is formed: dihydrotestosterone or DHT. This new hormone penetrates the hair follicles, where it damages and shrinks them, eventually preventing visible hair from growing.
