Description
Telmisartan belongs to a class of medication called Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonists. Angiotensin is a hormone in our bodies, which is capable of tightening arteries and veins. Telmisartan blocks this hormone and thereby causes the blood vessels to relax and widen. This in turn reduces hypertension and prevents some of the negative consequences of high blood pressure, such as strokes, heart failure and kidney problems.

How does Telmisartan work?
Telmisartan belongs to a class of medication called Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonists. Angiotensin is a hormone in our bodies, which is capable of tightening arteries and veins. In addition, this hormone causes water and salt to be retained by the kidneys, which increases the amount of fluid in the blood vessels. Telmisartan blocks the actions of Angiotensin and this causes the blood vessels to relax and widen and reduces the amount of fluid. Both of these reactions help lower the blood pressure.
Can I drive while taking Telmisartan?
Taking Telmisartan can cause dizziness and may make you more prone to fainting. While taking this medication, you should not drive or perform any activity that requires alertness, unless you are sure you can do this safely.
Are there negative interactions possible between Telmisartan and alcohol or food?
You should not drink alcoholic beverages while taking Telmisartan. Alcohol can lower your blood pressure and increase the side effects of this medication. Also, do not take any potassium supplements or salt substitutes while taking Telmisartan, unless your doctor has told you to. This medication can raise your potassium levels, which, in rare cases, can cause serious side effects, such as muscle weakness or a very slow heartbeat.
How long does it take to see the effects of Telmisartan?
When taking Telmisartan for the treatment of high blood pressure, it can take up to 4 weeks before you notice the full effects. It is important to continue taking the medication even if you feel well. People who suffer from high blood pressure often don’t feel sick.
What is the recommended dosage of Telmisartan?
When Telmisartan is taken as a treatment for high blood pressure, the recommended starting dosage is 40 mg, once daily. Based on how the body reacts and the side effects that occur, the dosage may then be adjusted. The usual dosage of Telmisartan lies in between 20-80 mg per day. With each change in dosage, it may take up to several weeks before the full effects are felt. The recommended dosage of Telmisartan for cardiovascular risk reduction is 80 mg per day.
